Have you ever felt as though you had just entered the Dark Night of The Soul?… Even the sound of the words,… Dark Night of The Soul,… can paint scenes and images in the mind that may seem to echo from the days of ancient past, to the scenes of the very present where your heart now beats, and even into the far and distant future that is so far away, that the mind may have great difficulty understanding the meaning of the mystery.
The phrase Dark Night Of The Soul is being used by many people today, from the metaphysical world of the New Age, to the psychiatric community of hospitals, clinics, and counseling centers where this term is being used to describe more different types of mental health diagnosis than one can imagine. It has even been used to describe the feelings a person might have during a break up, separation or divorce between a man and a woman.
Some will tell you that the phrase originated from the writings of Juan de Yepez, who became a Carmelite priest in the 1500’s and changed his name to John of The Cross. Today he is known as St. John of The Cross. He wrote a number of books including The Ascent of Mount Carmel, The Sayings of Light and Love, The Spiritual Canticle, and of course, The Dark Night, from which the phrase Dark Night Of The Soul has become known through out the world.
